A Crowd Pleaser - Arts Festival Oklahoma a Success
With thousands on hand this Labor Day weekend, the northwest grounds of the OCCC campus were a popular gathering site. Hand-made art from 150 artists, dozens of talented vocal performances and tasty festival treats were all on tap at the 31st annual Arts Festival Oklahoma.

This year, the public enjoyed performances on Saturday evening from Mezclave and Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. Sunday evening featured opening entertainment by Horseshoe Road, followed by The Oklahoma City Philharmonic and a grand fireworks display. Monday’s headline entertainment was Mike Black and the Stingrays.

In addition to mouthwatering corn dogs, funnel cakes and ice cream, visitors enjoyed an international culinary tour that showcased a variety of ethnic specialties from Mexico, Greece, Germany, and many others. This year’s festival featured 12 different food booths and tents with something for every palate. Another draw to AFO was the children’s activity tent. The festival again introduced children of all ages to the arts this holiday weekend as they enjoyed the giant sandbox and creating their very own pieces of original art.

The support of more than 2,000 volunteers again made the festival a community success. Thanks go out to the many faculty and staff volunteers that donated their time and energy this past weekend.

More Funding for Community Colleges
It’s a new day for community colleges thanks to more federal funding being made available to two-year schools.

Before beginning the grant search and secure process, OCCC faculty and staff members are encouraged to take part in learning opportunities that will be offered later this fall.

On Oct. 28, representatives from the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, Redlands Community College and Tulsa Community College will present information on grant possibilities and successes during a session in room 407 of the Keith Leftwitch Memorial Library from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Everyone interested in learning more about grant funding possibilities is invited to attend.

Scheduled for Nov. 3, from 8:30 to 10 a.m., and Nov. 5, from 3 to 4:30p.m., Joe Swalwell will conduct Beginning Grant Writing in room 101 of the Keith Leftwitch Memorial Library. Employees can register through MineOnline for the grant writing sessions.

For more information, please contact Joe Swalwell at jswalwell@occc.edu, or extension 7317. You may also reach Penny Hampton at phampton@occc.edu, or by calling extension 7827.

Walktober Competition
October is national walking month. To celebrate, OCCC is hosting a friendly walking competition for employees during the month of October. Walking is the gold standard of exercise. Since it uses nearly 200 muscles and is a safe, inexpensive and fun activity, almost anyone can do it. So, dig out those walking shoes and come walk with us.

Any employee can participate in the competition. Employees will be asked to set individual goals with the ultimate goal being to increase daily activity through walking. In addition, Walktober is designed to challenge individuals to set and reach new fitness goals.

A drawing for incentive prizes will be held each week for those who reach their goal during that particular week. At the end of October, all employees who meet their ultimate goal will have their names entered into a drawing for the grand prizes including a one-hour massage from Massage Envy for the runner up, and a two-day, one-night stay at the Oklahoma state park of your choice for the first place winner.

Walktober sign-up begins Monday, Sept. 14 and continues through Wednesday, Sept. 30. Late registration will be taken through Friday, Oct. 9.

Sign up by emailing your name and first target goal to walktober@occc.edu. Upon registering, employees will receive a “Walk your Way to Fitness” guide and daily log and a pedometer, if needed.

The grand prize and runner up winners will be announced Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009.

For more information or for questions, please contact Lisa Vaughan at lvaughan@occc.edu or 405-682-1611 ext. 7148.

Faculty Photography and Digital Art Exhibit

View the exhibit, meet the artists and enjoy refreshments from 5 to 7 pm. Plans are to make the exhibit available to the public from Sept. 8 through Sept. 30, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. More details to come.
