Human Resources Awarded
Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) was recently recognized with the 2009 Excellence in Human Resources Practice Award by the Southern Region of the College and University Professionals Association-Human Resources (CUPA-HR). Only one college or university in the region is selected for this annual award.
The award was presented to the college in May during CUPA’s annual conference in Louisville, KY. Oklahoma is one of 13 states that make up the Southern Region, of which OCCC is a member. Being named to this honor automatically makes OCCC the Southern Region’s nominee for the CUPA-HR national award that will be granted at the national convention in Las Vegas later this year.
The award was given to OCCC for the work of the newly formed Investment Committee. The committee was created to work with Gallagher & Associates to meet new 403(b) retirement plan requirements and eventually in selecting ING as the college’s new sole vendor for the OCCC 403(b) plan. The committee remains in place to continue to monitor employee investments, as required by the new Federal regulations.
“The members of the college Investment Committee are to be congratulated for their efforts on behalf of the full-time employees at our institution,” OCCC Executive Vice President, Dr. Jerry Steward, said. “This prestigious award is richly deserved.”
Gallagher representative, Eric Dyson, referred to the committee’s response to the change in the regulations and the work of the Investment Committee as exemplary and said that he wished he had videotaped the committee meetings to use in training demonstrating a best practice.
For more information about the award or the OCCC Human Resources Investment Committee, please call the Office of Human Resources at ext. 7810.
First Graduates Ready to take to the Wind
A milestone for Oklahoma City Community College and nearly 30 students occurred last week as the very first OCCC Wind Turbine Technician class graduated at OCCC’s John Massey Center.
As interest in the wind energy industry has expanded, a program to support this renewable energy industry has been developed and offered at OCCC. Within the program, students gained knowledge and technical expertise on wind turbine fundamentals, environmental issues, and safety concerns related to the industry.
The giant-sized wind turbines that have created such a stir of interest can be seen throughout the flat Oklahoma and Texas landscape, for miles. Soaring 300 to 400 feet high, the massive wind vanes are known as one of the best ways to convert wind energy into electricity. In fact, the use of wind turbines has grown rapidly, doubling in number between 2005 and 2008.
Just as this first group graduates, another is finishing its last few classes, and enrollment is being accepted for the fall course, also to be held at OCCC’s John Massey Center, located at 11919 S. I-44 Service Road.
For more information on the Wind Energy Technician Program, or to reserve your seat for the upcoming courses, please contact Rhonda Cantrell in Corporate Learning at 7853, by email at rcantrell@occc.edu, or log on to www.occc.edu/corporatelearning.
Child Care Spots Open
The Child Development Center and Lab School (CDCLS) will have several full-time child care spaces available for three and four year olds in our preschool classrooms beginning this August.
The CDCLS is open from 7 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., Monday through Friday to the children of students, OCCC employees, and the community.
The CDCLS serves student-parents in the evening from 5 to 10 p.m. for Student Scheduled Child Care. Please contact the CDCLS Lab Supervisor, Lee Ann Townsend, at ext. 7423 if you or someone you know would be interested.
Three Sports in One at OCCC
Swimming, biking and running combined this weekend at OCCC for the 14th annual Oklahoma City Super Sprint Triathlon.
Triathlon participants started at the Aquatics Center first for a 500 yard swim. Next, they hit the road for a 12 mile bike ride down south May Avenue to 149th Street, west on 149th to Meridian, and then back to campus. Competitors finished with a 5k run around Faculty Circle.
Awards were given to the top finisher in each age group as well as the top overall athlete, top relay, and top junior.

Pharmacy Tech Program Begins
The increase in the number of chain drug stores across the United States has resulted in an increased demand for trained pharmacy technicians. Also responding to the demand, Oklahoma City Community College will be offering the Technician I: Basic Prescriptions & Dispensing course during the summer.
The course, taught by Jeff Yanchick, a pharmacist and member of the Oklahoma Pharmacists Association, will offer participants a firm foundation to receive certification in this growing field. Students will meet June 15 through August 5 on Monday and Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. in the Keith Leftwich Memorial Library on the OCCC campus.
Prerequisites for the class include a high school diploma or GED and basic math skills. Cost for the course is $325.00 which includes all instruction and course materials.

Hollywood and OCCC Combine at OFI
OCCC once again hits the big screen as aspiring cinema professionals take part in the Oklahoma Film Institute (OFI) beginning June 4.
The Institute is led by Academy Award winning film producer and OCCC Artist in Residence Gray Frederickson (”The Godfather Trilogy”,”Apocalypse Now”). Frederickson says this is a “once in a lifetime” opportunity for those interested in learning true Hollywood filmmaking.
“Those who enroll in OFI have the ability to learn all facets involved in making movies, from concept to final cut,” Frederickson said.
OFI features a series of seven, three day clinics (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday) and one six day clinic, teaching students cinema production, directing, art direction, cinematography, lighting, makeup, editing and writing.
In previous years, OFI has been a three week course of full immersion in the filmmaking process, but this year, it will be designed as clinics, to let people enter the areas of filmmaking that interests them, and will require less time and tuition.
Also new this year, adding to the latest digital, high-definition equipment already in use at OCCC, this year’s institute will be housed in the brand-new Visual and Performing Arts Center recently dedicated on the north side of campus. The center features a state-of-the-art sound stage unlike anything else in Oklahoma.
Joining Frederickson will be producer/screenwriter Greg Mellott, chair of the Film and Video Production program at OCCC. Mellott will guide student through the process from screenwriting to directing and editing the final product.
During the first session, Frederickson offers training in production, where students learn everything from budgeting to script clearances and marketing.
Then during the second week, on June 11, students learn how a practical approach to directing.
The third session begins June 18 when students will learn all aspect of lighting in the studio as well as lighting exterior shots.
During the fourth session on June 25, students learn all aspects of cinematography, including hands-on training with some of the newest cameras available.
In July, the sessions include art direction, makeup and editing.
OFI concludes the week of July 23 when Mellott teaches all of the requirements needed for writing a professional screenplay, including format, structure, character development, target audience, and even copyright registration.
Tuition for each session is $450. Space is limited. For more information or to enroll, call 682-7847.
